Daniel Valchev was born on 10 August 1962. He completed his secondary education at the Fourth Language High School in Varna. He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in 1989 and in the following year was admitted as a full-time PhD student in the Department of Theory and History of State and Law. Since 1990, he has taught seminars first as a part-time assistant lecturer and later as a full-time assistant professor. In 1995, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic “State Power in Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Doctrine of Sovereignty of People.” In 2004, he was elected Associate Professor (habilitation thesis: “From Apology of Legal Norm to a Theory of Legal Order”), and in 2013 – he was appointed Professor (habilitation thesis: “Validity and Legitimacy in Law”).
Prof. Valchev has completed various specializations abroad, including at the Institut International d’Administration Publique and the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in Paris, as well as at the NATO Defense College in Rome. He was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by Soka University in Tokyo, Japan, and the title of Honorary Professor by Shanghai University in Shanghai, China.
