Dr. Stoyan Panayotov Ivanov was born on January 28, 1988. He has been university lecturer (assistant professor) at the Faculty of Law of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in Roman private law and Classical legal terminology since 2014.
He graduated summa cum laude from the Konstantin Kiril Filosof National High School for Ancient Languages and Cultures in Sofia (2007) with a specialization in Latin and Italian, and from the Faculty of Law of Sofia University with honors (2012). On November 2 2021, he was awarded the educational and scientific degree of Doctor of Law.
His professional career is connected with Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, where he was initially selected by the Department of Theory and History of State and Law as an honorary assistant in Roman private law for the 2013/2014 academic year, and in the period June 2014 – June 2018, he was appointed as a full-time assistant after winning a competition. He leads the exercises in Roman Private Law as a full-time assistant (2014-2018) for full-time and part-time students and as an honorary assistant (2018 – 2023). As a doctoral student and honorary assistant, he has also been assigned individual lectures in the discipline “Legal Terminology – Part I” (from 2019 to 2023).
He has specialised at UNIDROIT – the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law in Rome, Italy (2015) and in Fribourg and Neuchâtel, Switzerland, as a scholarship holder of the Konstantin and Zinovia Katsarovi Foundation (2016 and 2017).
Stoyan Ivanov has been a member of the Sofia University research project team since 2015 and is currently. He is secretary of the electronic Roman law journal of the Faculty of Law IUS ROMANUM, published under the project, and of the Balkan Association for Roman Law and Roman Legal Tradition “Societas pro iure romano,” established in 2016. He actively participates in the activities of the Roman Law project, organizing a number of meetings of the Roman Law Club at the Faculty of Law of Sofia University, as well as annually in the preparation of scientific conferences, public lectures, competitions, etc.
The topic of his doctoral dissertation is “The Comapnies of Publicans” and addresses a number of issues related to the forms of association in Roman law, public-private partnerships, contracting with the State, and the concept of legal entities.
His research interests are in the field of Roman private and public law, ancient and European legal history, legal terminology, contract law, and property law.
He is a member of the Union of jurists in Bulgaria.
He is fluent in Italian, English, Modern Greek, and Latin. He also uses Turkish, Spanish, and Ancient Greek.
He is a lawyer at the Sofia Bar Association.
Since March 2025, he has been the scientific secretary of the Faculty of Law of Sofia University.
Stoyan Ivanov is author of more than 20 publications related to the History of law, Roman law, and Contemporary law.
